Mission
The NGOWG on Women, Peace and Security advocates for the equal and full participation of women in all efforts to create and maintain international peace and security. Formed in 2000 to call for a Security Council resolution on Women, Peace and Security, the NGOWG now focuses on implementation of all Security Council resolutions that address this issue. The NGOWG serves as a bridge between women’s human rights defenders working in conflict-affected situations and policy-makers at U.N. Headquarters.

Open Letter to Permanent Representatives to the UN: Recommendations on the Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security

On 28 October, Nigeria will host an Open Debate on Women Peace and Security, marking the 11th anniversary of the adoption of resolution 1325 (2000), with a focus on the theme, “Women’s Participation and Role in Conflict Prevention and Mediation”. This anniversary presents an opportunity for the Council and every UN Member State to take further action to ensure full implementation of SCR 1325 and all relevant Women, Peace and Security obligations.

For September, in which Lebanon has the Security Council presidency, the MAP provides recommendations on country situations including: Afghanistan, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Syria. The September MAP also provides recommendations for the expected discussions on Preventive Diplomacy, and on the implementation of Women, Peace and Security commitments, including the SRSG on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

Open Letter to Member States of the United Nations: Recommendations on the 66th Session of the General Assembly

The NGOWG has sent a letter to all UN Member State Missions suggesting they emphasize the important role of women in mediation in their statements at the General Debate at this year’s General Assembly. Member States were encouraged to emphasize the importance of ensuring women's rights are embedded within peace agreements, as well as within guidelines and good practice regarding mediation. Additionally, Member States are encouraged to emphasize the central role women can play in all prevention efforts, and the need to support and promote women’s participation in all these efforts.

Monthly Action Points (MAP) for the Security Council: August 2011

The NGOWG has released the August 2011 Monthly Action Points (MAP) on Women, Peace and Security for the UN Security Council. For August, in which India has the Security Council presidency, the MAP provides recommendations on country situations including: Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Libya, Sudan and South Sudan. The August MAP also provides recommendations regarding the Council's expected discussion of Peacekeeping, and on necessary steps in the Council's implementation of its Women, Peace and Security commitments.

Statement on the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The NGO Working Group on Women Peace and Security is alarmed at the latest reports by its member organizations and the United Nations of mass rape and other crimes against civilians perpetrated in the Fizi area of South Kivu by troops of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).The NGO Working Group urges the Government of the DRC, the United Nations and Member States to heed the voices of Congolese women, who have repeatedly stressed that such attacks stem from the persistent failure of the DRC authorities to advance equality for women and ensure justice for survivors.
